Why Engineered Wood is Better Than Hardwood
In the historic heart of North Carolina, we value things that are built to last—much like the timeless architecture of New Bern. At Fortner Homes, we bring that same respect for quality to every detail of our builds, including the ground you walk on. One of the features we are most proud to include at The Farm at Breidablik is engineered wood flooring.
While they share the classic, soulful look of traditional hardwood, engineered planks offer structural advantages that make them a favorite for the modern homeowner.
The "High-Tech Sandwich"
Think of a solid hardwood plank as a thick piece of oak—it’s wood all the way through. Engineered hardwood, however, is what we call a "high-tech sandwich." It consists of a genuine hardwood veneer on top, supported by a multi-layer core where each layer is placed in an opposing direction.
This cross-grain construction provides dimensional stability. Unlike solid wood, which is "alive" and breathes—constantly expanding and contracting with our coastal humidity—this engineered design prevents warping. You won’t have to worry about the frustrating gaps in the winter or "cupping" in the summer that often plague solid wood.
Versatility and Resilience
Because of this enhanced stability, these floors handle moisture with far more grace than solid wood. This resilience allows us to install them virtually anywhere in your home—even in finished basements where solid hardwood would be a risky choice due to moisture.
Sustainability Underfoot
We believe in being good stewards of our natural resources. From a sustainability standpoint, engineered wood is a "tree-friendly" solution. Manufacturers use a thin slice of slow-growing oak or walnut for the visible surface and a faster-growing, more abundant wood for the core. This technology allows us to get significantly more flooring out of every single tree.
The Designer Look
If you’ve ever admired those expansive 7-inch or 9-inch wide planks in designer homes, you are almost always looking at engineered wood. Achieving those widths in solid wood is incredibly expensive and prone to severe warping. With our exquisitely tailored engineered options, you get that high-end look with the durability your daily life demands.
At Fortner Homes, we don't just build houses; we curate experiences. By choosing materials that are both beautiful and structurally superior, we ensure your home is a place of comfort for years to come.
